Younis snubs captaincy

Pakistan batsman Younis Khan has knocked back the opportunity to take the captaincy from suspended skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Younis, 28, shocked reporters when he left a joint press conference he was to have with coach Bob Woolmer after revealing he would not be leading Pakistan in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in India.

"I don't want to be a dummy captain and the reason why I have refused will be revealed afterwards," he told BBC Sport.

The Pakistan Cricket Board said it was trying to persuade Younis to take the captaincy.

"We are in negotiations with him. As soon as we get any details we will reveal them to the media," PCB director of operations Saleem Altaf said.

It is unclear whether Younis will still be able to keep his place in the Pakistan team.

Younis was appointed captain after the ICC handed Inzamam a four-match suspension for his role in the forfeited Test at the Oval.

Inzamam was banned for bringing the game into disrepute after he refused to return to the field during the fourth Test against England in August.

Pakistan begins its ICC Champions Trophy campaign on October 17 in Jaipur.
