Thousands of children flocked to Cornwell Cricket Club in Auckland on Tuesday to get a glimpse of their cricketing idols.
Young cricket enthusiasts (and those young at heart) lined up for up to an hour to catch a glimpse, with the cue to get autographs stretching half way round the boundary line at the ground.
The likes of BLACKCAPS Captain Daniel Vettori, Shane Bond, Jake Oram and Ian Butler were on hand to sign posters, bats and tops.
Captain Daniel Vettori was pleased with the turn out. “Today’s been a really busy one,” he says. “Bit I think it’s great to see so many people out supporting grass roots cricket.”
Fans also took part in cricket activities including batting, bowling and catching. James Franklin seemed to be a favourite with the fans in the batting net while Kyle Miles enjoyed all of the activities. “It’s great interacting with the kids who are so keen on cricket,” Mills says. “And it’s great to see a number of different clubs represented today.”
Wicket keeper Brendon McCullum agrees. “It’s good to see so many people down here and it’s encouraging to see such a huge following.”
Someone new to the fan signing is BLACKCAP new comer Martin Guptill. “It’s been a fun day and it’s been interesting meeting lots of different people.”
Many of the players stayed back an extra half an hour to ensure nobody missed out on gaining an autograph or get a photograph with their favourite player.
All in all the day was a complete success and it goes to show the support the BLACKCAPS have in the Auckland region.
