Set 392 to win, the home side appeared set to bat out a draw when it reached 3-158 by tea, however spinners Anil Kumble (4-107) and Virender Sehwag (2-39) turned the Test on its head with five wickets in the final session.
The Windies started their run chase in promising fashion with Darren Ganga making 36 in an opening partnership if 67 before falling victim to Kumble.
However, the loss of Ramnaresh Sarwan and Brian Lara in quick succession left the hosts reeling at 3-72.
Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul added 99 for the fourth wicket to steady the ship for the Windies, before the opener was trapped in front by Kumble for 69, sparking a steady loss of wickets.
Chanderpaul fell eight overs later for 62, however the dismissals of Dwayne Bravo and Dinesh Ramdin by Sehwag left the Windies' tail needing to bat for nearly 21 overs to save the Test.
Ian Bradshaw lasted 37 balls for 10 before becoming the eighth man to lose his wicket and when Dave Mohammed was dismissed for a brisk 52, Edwards and Collymore were left with 19 balls to see off.
However, the pair survived the onslaught from Kumble and Sreesanth to deny the Indians.
