Wickets galore day one of Under-19

The first round of two-day matches at this year’s National Under 19 Tournament at Lincoln got off to an interesting start. Overcast conditions during the first session of the first day saw 19 wickets fall before lunch throughout the three matches.

Auckland was the only team that managed to recover, finally being bowled out for 308 by Central Districts on Lincoln Green. Aniket Parikh led the recovery with a very patient 129 from 201 deliveries. Parikh put on a partnership of 179 with Fisher (76) to ensure they got out of trouble at 120-6. Central Districts are 70-2 in reply going into the second day of the first match. Dominic Thompson is 28 not out and Liam Muggeridge is 29 not out at stumps.

Wellington were put in to bat by Canterbury on Lincoln No.3 and were bowled out just after lunch for 76. Daniel Stanley (4-8 from 8 overs) and Henry Shipley (4-19) were the outstanding Canterbury bowlers. The Canterbury batsmen played patiently and have claimed first innings points, finishing the day on 141-9, with a lead of 65 runs. Jack Boyle top scored with 47. Wellington’s Alex Ridley took 3-37 from 15 overs.

At the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Otago were bowled out for 133 by Northern Districts, after being 59-6 at lunch. Ryan Adam led the recovery with a controlled innings of 42. Wickets were shared by the Northern Districts bowlers, with Nick Stobart being the most impressive with 3.26 from 12 overs. ND were bowled out for 117, giving Otago a 16 run lead going into day two. Bailey Andrews-Kennedy returned outstanding figures of 5-26 from 11 overs to halt ND in their tracks late in the day.
