West Indian great dies

Former West Indies cricket legend Sir Clyde Walcott has died in a Barbados hospital at the age of 80.

The star batsman, who first stormed onto the international scene in the 1950s, scored 3,798 runs from his 44 Test appearances at an average of 56.68.

Walcott also had 15 centuries to his name with his highest score of 220 made against England at Bridgetown in 1954.

However, his finest achievement with the bat came the following year when he became the first player to make five centuries in a single series, amassing 827 runs in five centuries against Australia.

Walcott was later manager of the West Indies team which won the 1975 and 1979 World Cup and he also spent some time as the chairman of the ICC.

His death comes less than two months after that of one of his on-field adversaries, former England fast bowler Fred Trueman.
