Weather enforces BLACKCAPS stalemate

The BLACKCAPS shared a draw with Kent at Canterbury after rain washed out the final day of the first-class match at the St Lawrence Ground.

Inclement weather resulted in less than 40 overs from the final two days of the match, the tourists progressing to 92 for one in reply to their hosts’ 324 for one.

Captain Jamie How was happy to have had some game time after last week’s arrival in the UK. The team also took of an MCC XI at Arundel.

"We were expecting some rain at this time of year and that is why we have quite a packed schedule,” he said.

"There is plenty of time left, we did get a bit of a workout in this game but obviously not as much as we hoped for."

The opener now relinquished the captaincy with the imminent arrival of skipper Daniel Vettori and deputy Brendon McCullum, alongside the rest of the BLACKCAPS’ Indian Premier League contingent.

"They are looking forward to joining in with the tour, working hard with us and sharing a few of their Indian stories, no doubt,” How said.

"We are a young side and if we string together good sessions we are going to be competitive.

"As Kiwis we enjoy being the underdogs; we are confident and will go about our work and come that first Test we will be up to speed."

The BLACKCAPS, with Ross Taylor, Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills also added to the mix, will now play Essex, in a second first-class match, at Chelmsford.

Meanwhile, Vettori enjoyed victory in his final match for Delhi Daredevils over Ross Taylor’s Bangalore Royal Challengers.

Gautam Gambhir’s 86 and a 50 from Shikhar Dharwan set up a 98-run stand which set up Delhi for a total of 197 for five at Feroz Shah Kotla.

Taylor struck 29 from 15 balls in the Bangalore reply, but Glenn McGrath took four for 29 and Vettori 1/19 to set up victory by 10 runs, despite 54 from Jacques Kallis.
