Watling doubles up for Knights

BJ Watling’s second century in successive matches for State Northern Knights ensured a 36-run win against State Canterbury Wizards at Hamilton.

The Natal-born right-hander made 101 as the Knights again thrived with the bat, making 294 for seven.

Watling and James Marshall forged a 184-run stand for the third wicket after Leighton Burtt took two quick wickets, including Nick Horsley for a golden duck.

After Watling and Marshall eventually succumbed, Peter McGlashan launched 47 from just 18 deliveries to increase his side’s advantage.

The Knights appeared to have the Wizards reeling towards defeat at 92 for five after 22 overs, but a century partnership between captain Kruger van Wyk (56) and Chris Harris brought the visitors back into the game.

Harris continued through to 77 not out, and although Iain Robertson provided an unbeaten 31, they could not eclipse the hosts’ total.
