Warne vents frustration

Shane Warne has shown his frustration with Lancashire skipper Mark Chilton on the final day of the English county championship by bowling bouncers at the Lancashire batsman.

After Sussex sealed the championship on Friday, Lancashire went into the match with no danger of slipping from second position and resumed in the final day on 2-13, with a lead of 236.

Warne, the Hampshire captain, and Chilton were said to have agreed on a declaration when the lead reached about 350 to give both sides a slim chance of getting an outright victory.

But when Chilton refused to declare after lunch with a lead of 300-plus Warne showed his displeasure at his opposite's decision and proceeded to bowl a series of unorthodox deliveries in protest.

Warne bowled several bouncers and even resorted to lobbing the ball from a standing start. He was joined by paceman Nic Pothas, who decided to bowl some gentle off-breaks and even some excruciatingly slow, lofted deliveries that were no-balled for bouncing twice before reaching the batsman.

Chris Benham also did his part, bowling three deliveries with his left arm and then three with his right in one over.

But the bizarre bowling protest had no effect as Lancashire continued to bat on relentlessly and ended on 6-339, an overall lead of 562, leaving Hampshire no chance of a blazing run chase and frustrating the spectators with a dull afternoon to end the county season.
