According to the reports from England the right-handed batsman is scheduled to meet with medical staff tonight to discuss the prognosis of his injury.
Major surgery would sideline Vaughan for nine months while the less invasive 'clean-up' surgery would put him out of action for 10 weeks.
Vaughan's injury signals a crisis in England's player ranks with spinner Ashley Giles out with a hip injury, Andrew Flintoff suffering an ankle complaint and swing bowler Simon Jones out for the rest of the year.
England coach Duncan Fletcher remained philosophical on the injury toll.
"Vaughan, Giles, Jones and Flintoff are world-class players and their injuries are a concern," said Fletcher in The Sun.
"I’ve adopted the attitude that it will be a huge bonus if they come back."
In some good news for the English team, star batsman Kevin Pietersen has been cleared to play against Sri Lanka after scans revealed no major damage to his knee.
