Up and coming women cricketers compete in Christchurch

The best of New Zealand’s young women’s cricketers will be in action in Christchurch next week for the 2009 National Women’s Development Tournament.

Teams from the six major associations will be competing for honours at the tournament, with Auckland looking to defend the title they won last year.

The tournament has been held annually since the 2003/04 season when it replaced the National Under 21 tournament.

It is the major women’s tournament below first class level, providing a national competition opportunity for players who are on the way up in the game.  With a focus on developing players below, or just beginning to play, domestic women's cricket, current and former White Ferns are ineligible to play in the tournament.

Previous winners include:

  • 2003/04  Central Districts
  • 2004/05  Canterbury and Auckland
  • 2005/06  Canterbury
  • 2006/07  Wellington
  • 2007/08  Canterbury
  • 2008/09 Auckland

The 2009/10 tournament will be played at Ilam University Playing Fields, Christchurch, from 14 to 19 December.

Competition begins with a round of Twenty20 matches followed by five rounds of one-day 50-over matches.  At the end of the six rounds the teams will be placed from 1st to 6th according to the points obtained during the six rounds.  The team ranked 1st will be declared the winner.

The draw for the first round of Twenty20 matches on Monday 14 December is:

Auckland v Canterbury
Central Districts v Wellington
Northern Districts v Otago
