It's a big day of action both home and abroad

Triple treat for Kiwi cricket lovers today

Remember, remember, the fifth of November! So the old folk rhyme goes, but for Kiwi cricket fans there’s much, much more than Guy Fawke’s Day on the mind.

One of the most talked-about tours of Australia in a long time is about to kick into top gear today with the first Test at the ’Gabba set to rivet Test cricket fans the world over.

Closer to home, today sees the first match in the 2015 season of Georgie Pie Super Smash as the Devon Hotel Central Stags take on the SBS Bank Otago Volts in a big-hitting contest at New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park (3.15pm, livescored at www.blackcaps.co.nz), while WHITE FERNS captain Suzie Bates and team head back out onto Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval looking to bag two more IWC points in the second One-Day International against Sri Lanka (livescoring at www.blackcaps.co.nz, entry is free) after an outstanding opening win.

Georgie Pie Super Smash ushers in five furious weeks of New Zealand’s biggest T20 showcase, hitting more venues across the country than ever this season, from Whangarei’s Cobham Oval (a first) to Dunedin’s University Oval with 17 matches broadcast LIVE on SKY Sport — the first of these from Seddon Park on Friday night.

New Zealand Cricket General Manager, Domestic Cricket David Cooper encourages families to come along and enjoy not only the fast-paced thrills of the T20 spectacle, but the fun, child-friendly environment that New Zealand Cricket has developed for all Georgie Pie Super Smash matches.

“We’ve scheduled over a third of the games on a Sunday afternoon, which is perfect for families,” says Cooper.

“We know people with young families are always looking for good value entertainment packages where they can relax with the kids, so we put a lot of thought into developing fun off-field activities for children — lots of mascots, face painting, Kids Zone games to play and activities — to keep the young ones amused so that mum and dad can kick back and relax. And, see some spectacular cricket.”

Pricing for the three-hour entertainment package is attractive with a family pass (two adults and three children) only $30 plus people buying their Georgie Pie Super Smash tickets online will also go in the draw to win a Ford Fiesta Trend Manual.*

Cooper says the mix of local and international talent across all six teams bodes well for a very exciting five weeks.

“We have the ilk of Sri Lankan superstar batsman Mahela Jayawardene coming to play for the Stags and a raft of BLACKCAPS who can’t wait to get stuck in, from the Volts’ Nathan McCullum to Mitch McClenaghan and Colin Munro for the Aces, the Stags’ George Worker, Adam Milne and Ben Wheeler to Ish Sodhi for the Knights, and very strong teams across the board. I’m expecting a hotly-contested competition.”
