As New Zealand’s sole betting agency, the TAB has offered betting on sports for almost fifteen years. The TAB started taking bets on cricket in 1996 and a portion of all cricket betting turnover has gone back into the grassroots game ever since.
Over this time the TAB has worked closely with New Zealand Cricket and in the past five years it has been able to invest over $500,000 into growing cricket in this country. New Zealand Cricket use the funds to support the Major Associations who in turn provide coaching, development and youth programmes to support and grow the game of cricket in New Zealand.
The TAB is proud of its association with New Zealand Cricket. We are committed to developing the game through responsible promotion of betting as a social entertainment option. There is nothing like a bet for adding excitement to the summer game.
We recognise however the importance of sports betting having clear rules and effective controls. In this context it is useful to understand the TAB’s governance structure for the role and operations of the TAB are defined in New Zealand Law, and ultimately overseen by the New Zealand Government.
How does this work? The TAB is managed by the NZ Racing Board which has statutory responsibilities under the Racing and Gambling Acts. The activities of the NZ Racing Board are monitored in turn by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) to ensure that they comply with these Acts. Therefore, the TAB operates under strict controls, which are intended to give bettors in New Zealand confidence about the integrity of betting on racing and sports including cricket.
The summer of 2010/11 will bring Pakistan to the shores of New Zealand and the TAB are thrilled to partner New Zealand Cricket to help customers get even closer to the action.
