Tendulkar faces test

Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar will undergo a fitness test early next week to determine whether he is ready to return to the international cricket arena.

Tendulkar has not played for India since undergoing shoulder surgery earlier in the year.

However, he has taken part in recent club cricket fixtures in England where he has been at his trademark best, notching up three centuries in the process.

"The fitness test will be conducted a day before the team is chosen for the tri-series in Sri Lanka," India board secretary Niranjan Shah told the BBC.

The one-day series in Sri Lanka will also involve South Africa and it begins on August 14 with the final taking place on the 29th.

It comes at the start of a busy winter for India, who will host the ICC Champions Trophy in October and November before undertaking a tour to South Africa.

Following the South African tour, India will take part in another tri-series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka before heading to the World Cup in the Caribbean.
