Taylor to head search

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor will head the selection panel charged with finding a replacement for outgoing Australia coach John Buchanan.

Buchanan announced he would be stepping down from his role following the World Cup in the West Indies next year after taking over as coach from Geoff Marsh in the 1999-2000 Australian summer.

Taylor will lead a five-man selection committee, which also includes Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland, directors Allan Border and Daryl Foster, and operations general manager Michael Brown.

After the success of the Australian team under Buchanan, Taylor said finding a replacement would be no easy task.

"The recommendation of a replacement coach will be one of the most important decisions Cricket Australia needs to make in the next 12 months, especially given the benchmark set by John Buchanan during his time in the role," Taylor said.

"The committee will discuss in the next few weeks the process it will use and the criteria it will set for the appointment."

Several strong candidates have already emerged for the top job, including Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody and Australian Centre of Excellence coach Tim Nielsen.

Moody has enjoyed several successes since taking over Sri Lanka last year, most notably a drawn Test series with England and a 5-0 whitewash in the one-day series that followed.

Meanwhile Nielsen, the former South Australian wicketkeeper, has spent time under Buchanan and has also played a major part in grooming the next generation of Australian internationals at the centre of excellence.
