Symonds set challenge

Australia coach John Buchanan believes all-rounder Andrew Symonds has plenty of work to do in order to regain his spot in the Test side.

Symonds held his position in the Test side throughout the summer of 2005-06, but was dropped in favour of Michael Clarke for Australia's tour of Bangladesh.

Clarke is believed to be the frontrunner to retain his position at No.6 when the Ashes begins in November, while Shane Watson has recovered from injury and may be chosen ahead of Symonds should the selectors opt for an all-rounder.

But Buchanan said Symonds can prove to selectors he deserves his spot with some big scores when the Pura Cup begins in October.

"The selectors obviously dropped him for a reason and he needs to re-establish his credentials to give them a reason to pick him again," Buchanan told the ABC.

Buchanan also said selectors have not yet finalised the opening positions in the one-day side for next year's World Cup.

Matthew Hayden and Phil Jaques will both play in the tri-series tournament in Malaysia next week and could use those matches to prove their credentials over current opening duo Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich.

"I think they've definitely targeted the opening spot, the spinning spot and probably the pace bowling spots as areas that we make sure we've finalised the right person or persons to give us the best 15 to take to the World Cup," he said.
