Specsavers steps up to the crease in support of Kiwi umpires

Kiwis’ favourite summer sport officials can feel confident when making the tough calls on the pitch this season now that Specsavers is behind them.

With intense pressure on cricket umpires to keep their eye on the ball, Specsavers are ensuring they are vision-ready for this season’s domestic competitions including the HRV Cup and Plunket Shield, claiming sponsorship for New Zealand’s domestic umpires.

New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden said healthy eyesight is an invaluable tool, as good vision is pivotal to doing their job well.

“Our role is to pick up on the finer aspects of play that the crowd can’t see from their seats. We’re there to have our eye on the ball, literally, and make the big calls that make the game legitimate.

“Without healthy eyesight, we can’t do our jobs properly,” said Mr Bowden.

Managing Director for Specsavers New Zealand, Graeme Edmond, said he is proud to be in partnership with New Zealand Cricket, an organisation for which eye health is so important.

“When summer hits it is so important to think about your eyes and preventing the damage that can occur when out in the sun. Getting your eyes tested every two years and wearing sunglasses while outdoors is critical.

“Getting behind our New Zealand umpires this season is a fantastic way to show how eyecare can make a real difference and lift performance in the sporting arena, as well as everyday life,” said Mr Edmond.
