South Island Primary Festival a Success

Another successful installment of the South Island Primary Boys Festivals has come to a close. The two festivals were held in Alexandra and Christchurch with 36 teams in total competing across both events.

It is the first time the event has been held with no points tables or trophies which allows parents and coaches to focus on creating enjoyable and memorable experiences for the players. The removal of points tables and trophies was a decision made in collaboration by the Major Associations and District Associations from within the South Island.

A highlight of the festival in Christchurch was the players playing at the Hagley Park Polo Grounds having the ability to go into Hagley Oval during the lunch break to watch the BLACKCAPS take on Bangladesh in the second test.

Teams in Alexandra were afforded a rare opportunity to play a game on the number one pitch at Molyneux Park Oval which is only used for Hawke Cup and first-class cricket.

Coach development was a focus for both festivals with four coach developers working across the two festivals to support and provide development opportunities for coaches coaching the various teams. Coaches and the quality of coaching has a big impact on the experience for the participants, the inclusion of a coach development system within the festivals is an exciting prospect.
