With just a week and a half to go before Finals weekend begins at Yarrow Stadium, the race is supercharged in what’s proving to be a thrilling edition of Georgie Pie Super Smash!
Here’s how the points table looks heading into make-or-break week.
“Super Smash Sunday” saw the SBS Bank Otago Volts’ postion as frontrunners come under threat when they were upset by the Canterbury Kings in Dunedin, but when the Devon Hotel Central Stags blew away the strong SKYCITY Northern Knights later that afternoon in New Plymouth, it meant the Volts held onto their place at the top of the ladder.
They’ve sent a thank you card to Sri Lankan superstar Mahela Jaywardene, who has rolled out two gorgeous back-to-back half centuries in his two games so far. How good was that masterclass at Seddon Park? Innings of the season so far.
All six teams are still mathematically alive as we head into Week Five. But, with only three round robin games left, defending champions the Mighty Ape Wellington Firebirds have to make it three from three!
In theory they could end up on 20 points and level with the Volts, if the Volts lose to the Mondiale Auckland Aces on Thursday and then again in their last match against the chasing Knights, on Super Smash Sunday.
That would make every Firebirds match a thriller, starting with 4pm this Wednesday at the Basin Reserve where they host the Canterbury Kings. So if you’re cheering for the ‘Birds, keep flocking to those banks, because they’ve never needed your support more! 
The Kings have got two games left and, like the Stags, are also under pressure to catch the top three teams.
So the royal Cantabrians will be all fired up for the Basin tomorrow, too, while it’s do or die for the hosts!
If the Firebirds get up, they’ll then be hoping the Aces beat the Volts in Dunedin the next day (this Thursday) before the Firebirds head to Napier to take on the Stags and their master card Mahela Jayawardene.
Will we see a T20 century in this year’s Georgie Pie Super Smash? Jayawardene went so, so close to posting the rare milestone at Pukekura Park, batting alongside the man who held the previous highest inidvidual score this season. Here’s the top innings so far:
