Scorching debut ton sets Basin on Fire!

Until today, 21-year-old Wellington Firebird Tim Robinson had a T20 career tally of 181 runs from 14 games since his November 2021 debut.

Today, he almost doubled that in one go, by smashing the second biggest ton in Dream11 Super Smash history.

The young power hitter was the toast of the Cello Basin Reserve after he blasted 139 off just 64 balls.

He batted throughout the Firebirds innings, turning up the gas after his hundred was on the board.

Matt Bacon's first ball of the 20th over went to the boundary, and after that Robinson caned the Otago paceman for four consecutive sixes, putting Robinson in sight of the New Zealand record.

He was dismissed off the last ball, however - going for one last boundary when he had been just two runs away from equalling Michael Bracewell's Dream11 Super Smash overall league and Wellington Firebirds record of 141 not out (set against the Central Stags, at Pukekura Park two seasons ago).

Robinson's first 50 had come up in 25 balls, and he maintained the pace as his maiden century arrived off just 50 balls - placing him in the top 12 fastest centuries in men's Dream11 Super Smash history.

Studded with 10 fours and 10 sixes (and a few let-offs in his audacious innings, as catches went to ground), his breakthrough knock was supported by captain Nick Kelly (48) with whom he shared a 125-run second wicket stand, and an aggressive Nathan Smith who put on 71 with him for the fifth wicket, the final stand of the innings.

The Firebirds reached 234/5 and that proved enough for a fat 74-run victory over the Otago Volts who were bowled out in reply for 160 in the 17thover.

Earlier, the Wellington Blaze kicked off a good day for the capital with a hard fought 23-run win over the Otago Sparks, despite a career-best haul of 4/28 from the Sparks' young PJ Watkins.

The Sparks had restricted the Blaze to 140/8, but lost big early wickets with captain Suzie Bates falling in the sixth over to fellow WHITE FERN Jess Kerr.

Bates's 25 proved to be the top score as the visitors fell away to be all out for 117 in the last over, Leigh Kasperek picking up 3/25 and ably supported by the Kerr sisters (2/15 for Jess and 2/17 for Melie Kerr).

Tomorrow the action moves to Hamilton with defending men's champion Northern Brave in action for the first time, in the doubleheader against Central at Seddon Park.
