Records tumble on Day One of Gillette Cup!

Christ’s College 395/9 (T Seeto 160, N Gibb 125, M Hocquard 2-14) beat Mount Albert Grammar School (W McDonald 64*, D Patel 48, L Swain 5-37), Bert Sutcliffe Oval

Christ’s College have made a resounding statement on day one of their second-ever Gillette Cup appearance, breaking numerous records along the way.

Batting first, opening batsman Tim Seeto (160 runs) and captain Nick Gibb (125 runs) struck a mammoth 276 runs for the second wicket – smashing the previous Gillette Cup partnership record by 74 runs (202 between Simon Hickey & Michael Haddleton (Kings College – 2011)).

Seeto’s 160 is tied second for the highest individual score at Gillette Cup, and helped Christ’s beat the previous highest team total at Gillette Cup (363/8 by Wellington College in 2019). While Mount Albert Grammar struggled with the ball, Lukasz Swain (5-37) and Harrison Wills (3-57) never gave in – Swain claiming the first 5-wicket bag of tournament.

MAGS showed plenty of heart in response, compiling three 50+ run partnerships amongst their batting innings. Captain Drhuv Patel showed his class with a run-a-ball 48, while Wesley Donald (64*) kept MAGS in the game with a fighting half-century in the middle order.

While Ryan Kridge (36) and openers Patel (29) and Swain (27) all made valuable contributions, the record-breaking knock from Christ’s eventually proved too much – Christ’s winning by 124 runs.
