Records tumble in Test

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have put on the second biggest Test partnership in history to leave Sri Lanka well in control of the first Test against South Africa in Colombo.

Heading into the second day with their partnership already up to 114, the pair continued where they left off to finish at stumps with it up to a whopping 471 runs.

Sri Lanka is now well in control of the Test on 485-2, already leading by a monumental 316 over the struggling tourists.

Just prior to the close of play, Sangakkara and Jayawardene outdid Black Caps Andrew Jones and Martin Crowe's previous record for best third-wicket stand in Test match history.

Left-handed Sangakkara, the team's wicket-keeper, is on 229, with right-handed skipper Jayawardene on 224 heading into the third day.

The only partnership in Tests to have amassed more runs was that of compatriots Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama.

Their 576 for the second wicket came against India, also in Colombo, in 1997-98.
