Record-setting start to season

ROUND ONE WRAP

The Hallyburton Johnstone Shield is off to a flier for 2020/21 after team records were smashed at both Centennial Park, Oamaru and Pukekura Park, New Plymouth on the first day of the New Zealand women's Domestic season.

The Canterbury Magicians and Central Hinds both took comfortable wins with records falling, while the Basin Reserve witnessed a tense nailbiter between Wellington Blaze and Northern Districts who took the win with just two balls to spare.

Records broken today include:

  • Frances Mackay and Kate Ebrahim, third wicket record and highest partnership for any wicket for Canterbury Magicians: 240 runs
  • Highest team total for Canterbury Magicians in Hallyburton Johnstone Shield: 321/4
  • Second highest List A total by Canterbury Magicians: 321/4 (behind only their 425/6 set by the Magicians against Pakistan in 1996/97, at Garrick Park)
  • Frances Mackay extended her own Canterbury Magicians record for most List A centuries to 13
  • Auckland Hearts: lowest team total for Auckland Hearts in Hallyburton Johnstone Shield: 49 all out
  • Lowest total against Central Hinds in Hallyburton Johnstone Shield: 49 all out (Auckland Hearts).

So, dramatically contrasting fortunes, and results, for the Canterbury Magicians who were visiting the Otago Sparks in Oamaru, and defending champions the injury-hit Auckland Hearts who had a day to forget away at Pukekura Park where the ball was swinging for the hosts.
The match was over before lunch.

Former WHITE FERN Kate Ebrahim's unbeaten century was just the fourth of her List A career and second for the Magicians after returning to the side following a year-long maternity break.

Meanwhile the masterful Frances Mackay is closing in on yet another unique record - with 14 understood to be the current mark worldwide in women's List A cricket for most centuries for a single team.

The Sparks, Hearts and Wellington Blaze will all get a shot a revenge tomorrow (Sunday) in round two at the same venues.
