Ranatunga to coach?

Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has told the BBC he has received an offer to coach an English county cricket side next year.

The former middle-order batsman resigned from his post as Sri Lanka's deputy minister of tourism last week to devote his energy to his nation's cricket board.

However, he has since made statements to suggest he will travel to England in 2007 to take up a coaching role.

"I have been contacted by a county in England for coaching and a country wants me to be their consultant up to the World Cup," he said.

"If I am not required by my country, maybe I will consider one of these."

Ranatunga refused to disclose any further information about the reported county cricket offer.

The stocky batsman played 93 Tests and 269 one-day internationals for Sri Lanka, skippering the side for 11 years and retiring in 2001.
