Rain helps Windies to victory

Rain has helped the West Indies to an unconvincing 29-run win over India in game two of the DLF Cup in Malaysia.

India smashed 5-309 from its 50 overs, thanks largely to a brilliant 141 not out from star batsman Sachin Tendulkar, and in reply the West Indies were 2-140 from 20 overs before the rain set in.

No further play took place, and under the Duckworth-Lewis system the West Indies won by 29 runs despite the match looking delicately poised.

The West Indies began the chase positively despite the fall of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who was caught at fine leg when he mis-timed a pull off Rudra Singh.

Chanderpaul's opening partner Chris Gayle blasted a quickfire 45 that featured nine boundaries, and found good support from Ramnaresh Sarwan (37 not out).

Gayle eventually chased one too many, caught behind slashing at Munaf Patel, but that only brought Brian Lara to the wicket.

Lara (27 not out) looked steady throughout the early stages of his knock and looked set to perhaps emulate the feats off Tendulkar earlier in the day and set up a tense finish, but unfortunately the rain set in and play was called off.

Earlier the Windies were made to pay after dropping Tendulkar on five in the third over, wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh inexplicably diving in front of Gayle at first slip in an attempt to take an athletic catch.

It was the reprieve the majestic opening batsman needed, smashing 13 boundaries and five sixes in an innings of controlled aggression to power to 141.

He carried his bat for only the second time in a one-day international to guide India to the impressive total.

Skipper Rahul Dravid, who won the toss and elected to bat on a good looking pitch, was comfortable from the start but was trapped in front by a fullish delivery that kept low from Dwayne Smith with the score on 79.

Irfan Pathan joined Tendulkar and picked off easy runs to compile a tidy half-century before a slower ball from Gayle got through his defences.

India lost its way in the middle order when Virender Sehwag (nine) got a devilish ball from Jerome Taylor that kept low and crashed into the stumps and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (two) was bowled in similar fashion.

But Tendulkar took control and combined with Suresh Raina (34) to push the score past 300.
