Proteas to pull plug?

South African cricketers are considering pulling out of the one-day international tri-series in Sri Lanka after a fatal bomb blast in Colombo.

Seven people were killed by the bomb, which was detonated close to where the Proteas and Indian cricketers are staying.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has since delivered its Sri Lankan counterpart an ultimatum, saying if its players are not guaranteed safety it will pull out of the series.

"I would like to have guarantees that our players will be safe," Brian Basson of the CSA told the BBC.

"If I don't get those guarantees I will have no hesitation in withdrawing the squad from Sri Lanka."

Team security has been beefed up in the wake of the bombing but Basson says officials will meet on Tuesday to discuss the outlook for the rest of the tournament.

Despite the bomb blast occurring within close proximity of the visiting nations, Sri Lanka Cricket spokeswoman Samantha Algama insists the series will continue.

"The cricket series will go on as scheduled," she said.

"All three teams agreed to continue the series after meeting with Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive Duleep Mendis.

"Mendis has promised maximum security to the teams. Everyone is concerned with the situation about the security, and also the weather that has already disrupted the tri-series."

The first match was set to take place on Monday between Sri Lanka and South Africa but it was washed out as a result of heavy thunderstorms.
