Proteas name strong squad

South Africa's Champions Trophy chances have received a boost with captain Graeme Smith and all-rounder Jaques Kallis both named in the squad after overcoming injuries.

Both players have undergone surgery this year and have not played in the one-day side since Australia toured in March.

Smith's surgery to his ankle is expected to keep him out of a three-match one-day series against Zimbabwe before the Champions Trophy, with Kallis, who required an elbow operation, to assume captaincy duties.

Cricket South Africa said Smith should be fit in time for the Champions Trophy.

Fast bowler Charles Langeveldt and all-rounder Justin Kemp have also been named in the Champions Trophy squad after overcoming injuries.

Stand-in captain during South Africa's Test series with Sri Lanka, Ashwell Prince, has been dropped, along with bowlers Johan van der Wath and Roger Telemachus, and uncapped off-spinner Thandi Tshabalala.

Van der Wath and Telemachus, however, have both been added to the 18-man squad to tackle Zimbabwe, as well as batsmen JP Duminy and Alviro Petersen.

South Africa squad for Champions Trophy:
Graeme Smith (captain), Loots Bosman, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, Boeta Dippenaar, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Hall, Jacques Kallis, Justin Kemp, Charl Langeveldt, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Robin Peterson, Shaun Pollock
