Proteas battle on

South Africa has mounted a stunning fight-back in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The tourists, chasing down a gargantuan 587 to draw level with Sri Lanka, have reached 311-4 at stumps on the fourth day.

Opening batsmen Jacques Rudolph and Andrew Hall (64) steered the Proteas to 165, before Dilhara Fernando and Muttiah Muralitharan exacted two important breakthroughs each for the hosts.

However, skipper Ashwell Prince remains defiantly out in the middle on 60 not out along with wicket-keeper Mark Boucher who is on 38 not out.

South Africa, still 276 runs adrift heading into the final day of the Test, must survive a last day onslaught from the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Earlier in the Test, top-order batsmen Mahela Jayawardene (374) and Kumar Sangakkara (287) helped Sri Lanka gain control of the Test after setting a world record third-wicket partnership of 624.
