Ponting stung by fine

Australian captain Ricky Ponting has been fined 100 percent of his match fee after querying a wide decision in Tuesday's DLF Cup match against the West Indies.

Ponting was found to have breached level 1.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct and was found guilty of 'showing dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse'.

He has 24 hours to lodge an appeal.

He pleaded guilty to the offence at an ICC hearing presided over by match referee Chris Broad and attended by the two on-field umpires Asad Rauf and Tony Hill and third umpire Mark Benson.

The offence was found to be a level one breach, which carries a fine of half of the player's match fee, but because Ponting had committed a similar offence in the past 12 months, the punishment was upgraded to level two.

Ponting had been found guilty of a similar offence in the second Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong in April this year.

A remorseful Ponting apologised and said he had let the team down.

"International cricket matches are passionate affairs but as the captain of the Australian cricket team, I understand it's my responsibility to uphold the spirit of the game and I know that through my actions last night I let myself and my team down," he said.
