Ponting hundred sinks Scots

Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden cut through Scotland’s attack to lead world champions Australia to a regulation victory as they opened their title defence in St Kitts.

Captain Ponting scored 113, the tournament’s first century, to guide his side to 334 for six at Basseterre’s Warner Park.

Hayden contributed 60, with Adam Gilchrist supplying 46 of a 91-run opening stand.

Brad Hogg hit three fours and three sixes for 40 in just 15 balls at the end of the innings.

Glenn McGrath took three wickets and instigated a run out as the Scots struggled to 42 for five.

Wicketkeeper Colin Smith led a fight back with a knock of 51, his first ODI half-century, but Australia dismissed the outsiders for 131 inside 41 overs to complete a 203-run triumph.

The title holders and the Scots also take on world ranking leaders South Africa and Holland in other first round games in Group A.
