Pietersen inspires England

Kevin Pietersen's awe-inspiring 142 and a productive final session in the field has seen England move within the grasp of an early victory over Sri Lanka in the second Test at Edgbaston.

Chasing down Sri Lanka's first innings score of 141, the hosts looked set to post a formidable total early on day two as Pietersen launched a full-scale assault on the wilting Sri Lankan bowling attack.

However, a sublime bowling spell by Muttiah Muralitharan, in which the world class spinner took six wickets to trigger a lower-order collapse of 5 for 5, managed to restrict England's lead to 154.

But despite Muralitharan's astounding efforts, it was another case of déjà vu as the visitors' top-order batsmen almost instantly set about crumbling.

Matthew Hoggard and Monty Panesar were the late-afternoon stars of the show for England with both nabbing two quick wickets each to leave the tourists reeling on 86-4 at stumps.
