Pakistan builds lead

Normal service resumed on day two of the Pakistan-India third Test when Pakistan took an overall lead of 180 runs.

India was dismissed for 238, seven runs short of Pakistan's first innings total, and Pakistan was 173-2 at stumps.

With so much time left in the Test, and the pitch much more benign, the reality is that Pakistan seems sure to bat as long as it can to set India a substantial target.

India resumed the second day with Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly attempting to recover the situation for their side. They added 81 runs to take India to 137 before the fifth wicket fell.

Their task was made easier as fast man Shoaib Akhtar struggled for a consistent line.

Ganguly was first dismissed, attempting a pull shot from Abdul Razzaq, which flew from the top edge to be caught at backward square leg when he had scored 34.

It was Mohammad Asif who proved the more dangerous, bowling at reduced speed, but much fuller of length, allowing to take advantage of what movement was still in the pitch.

Asif then caught Yuvraj in front and had him lbw for 45.

Mahendra Dhoni scored 13 before being caught behind from Razzaq for 13.

It was left to Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan to lift India over the 200-mark and closer to Pakistan's total. They added 56 runs for the ninth wicket, Pathan scoring 40 before falling to Shahid Afridi while Zaheer hit 21 before being dismissed by Asif to end the innings.

Asif ended with 4-78 and Abdul Razzaq 3-67.

The improved batting conditions were obvious as Pakistan put on 109 for the first wicket before Ganguly proved the partnership breaker when having Salman Butt lbw for 53 with the first ball of his second over.

Pathan finally had some reward when having Imran Farhat caught at mid-on for 83 from a mishit.

Having both been dismissed for ducks during Pathan's first innings hat-trick, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf batted diligently until stumps to end on 25 and 30 not out respectively.
