NZC National Under 19 tournament - day two

2020/21

NZC National Men's Under 19 Tournament

NZC High Performance Centre, Lincoln, Canterbury

18 December 2020

ROUND TWO

Central Districts took the tournament lead as the only undefeated team after the first two one-dayers, picking up a bonus point for their 93-run defeat of Otago Under 19.

Wellington and Auckland meanwhile got their first wins on the board, both with bonus points themselves to ensure CD stayed just four points in front.

Central captain Sebastian Lauderdale-Smith chose to bat first against Otago on Lincoln Green and, opening the batting with Sam Ferguson, went on to notch the first half century of the day for his side in a nicely paced innings.

He lost Ferguson early, but put on 89 with Curtis Heaphy (49) before being run out in the 22nd over at 102/2.

Otago picked up a couple more wickets before the 30-over mark, but not enough to slow the momentum - CD was well placed to add some late flourish.

Number six Baylee Foote (56 off 55 balls) and Tom Sutherland 51 off just 37 balls) combined for a run rate boost, CD landing on 290/8 after their 50. Otago had gone through nine bowlers by then, Jacob Cumming picking up a couple at the death.

Otago didn't get the same, solid start from its top order, however, and that cost the side when another couple of middle order wickets fell and the pressure was really turned on at 83 for five.

Number four Jacob Murray did a good job of trying to stave off total disaster with his 69 off 96 balls, but his runout effectively sealed his side's fate.

Jed Mockford was left unbeaten on 54* after the tail fell away, all ot for 197 at the start of the 46th over with Toby Findlay continuing his good start to the tournament with 3-17.

SCORES

Auckland Under 19 produced the biggest victory of the day with their 184-run win against ND, whom they rolled for just 81 in the chase.

With a promising bowling attack, Auckland was stinging from its first-round blip and this time legspinner Adithya Ashok pocketed 3-27 off his eight, Muhammed Abbas 3-21 off six while Peter Ruffell went for just one run off his three overs - and picked up a wicket.

ND's top score was an unbeaten 15* in the tail which tells the story of a dramatic collapse, after Auckland had earlier elected to bat first for a total of 215 all out in 47.1 overs.

ND utilised eight bowlers, Marcel Marconi picking up 3-21 and Parkes 3-23.

SCORES

Wellington's 83-run win over Canterbury on Lincoln No.3 started with the capital side winning the toss and batting first, putting up a total of 211 for seven in their 50.

It was a cautious affair to begin with, but a nicely paced innings on the small ground with opening batsman Caleb Montague (62 off 90) and first drop Tim Robinson (68 off 86) putting on 86 for the second wicket.

Sheahan was the most successful of the Canterbury attack with his 3-26 off 10, a cluster of wickets falling towards the death, and Jesse Frew was as busy as ever with 1-18 off his six and a couple of catches - but it would prove a little to late for the local men.

Canterbury just didn't get going in their reply, the wickets shared around the Wellington attack before a big victory was cemented in just the 33rd over.
