A review of the national selection process, signed off by the NZC Board last week, also resolved to advertise the role of General Manager National Selection to be vacated by incumbent Kim Littlejohn in September. Former New Zealand great Sir Richard Hadlee has agreed to be the independent expert on the panel interviewing for the role.

Initiated to provide clarity between the roles of the head coaches and the GM National Selection, the recently-completed review endorsed the following three principles:
“We believe the head coach is best placed to understand the selection challenges and the relative strengths and weaknesses of their squad, as well as having the best knowledge of the conditions and the opposition.
“Ultimately the head coach is accountable for the performance of their team and this selection structure reinforces that.”
White was particularly delighted that Hadlee had agreed to make himself available for the interview panel, describing the long-standing servant of New Zealand cricket as the ideal man for the job.

- The GM National Selection be involved in all selection aspects of NZC’s high performance teams – the BLACKCAPS, New Zealand A and New Zealand Under-19.

“Sir Richard has a vast experience of selection matters and a close understanding of what makes a good selector,” said White. “He was a former chairman of selectors, he’s undeniably one of our cricketing greats and it’s fantastic to have him involved in New Zealand cricket again.”
White said it was also important for women’s cricket to have their own management structure.
“This is in line with our strategic plan to give more support and emphasis to the women’s game.”
The selection structures for the different national teams are as follows:
BLACKCAPS and central NZC contracts: BLACKCAPS Head Coach (convenor) and GM National Selection. They will be supported by two high performance part-time talent scouts, and the six Major Associations coaches.
BLACKCAPS on tour: BLACKCAPS Head Coach (convenor) and BLACKCAPS captain.
New Zealand A: GM National Selection (convenor), NZA Coach and BLACKCAPS Head Coach.
New Zealand Under-19: GM National Selection (convenor) and Under-19 Coach.
White Ferns and White Ferns development: White Ferns Head Coach (convenor) and a newly appointed part-time selector. They will be supported by two high performance talent scouts.
The GM National Selection role is being advertised from today, and White says they are looking for someone with a good understanding of the international cricket environment.
“The successful candidate needs to have a wide ranging network and be respected within the cricket fraternity.”
The new appointee’s contract will run until 30 April 2015 - in line with the contract for the BLACKCAPS Head Coach. The part-time talent scout roles will also be re-advertised.
