Making a bold move from Northern Districts to the Central Hinds to reinvigorate her game has paid off for Natalie Dodd — even before this Saturday’s one-day national Hallyburton Johnstone Shield Grand Final, the first of her lengthy domestic career.
The 26-year-old right-handed opener has already busted Central’s record for most runs in a one-day season with 604 runs from 10 innings, at the season’s top average, nationally, of 120.80, heading into the Pukekura Park showdown with the Auckland Hearts. The national record for runs in a season is Amy Satterthwaite’s 892 for the Canterbury Magicians in 2014/15, but few others have emulated Dodd’s current-season efforts.
Now representing Taranaki, the 26-year-old, Waikato-based primary school teacher has enjoyed only one season that was more prolific — her head-turning 2012/13 season when the youngster scored an ND record 692 runs from 10 matches, including four centuries and two half centuries, for Northern Spirit. The erstwhile WHITE FERN who last represented New Zealand in March 2018 (T20i) heads into the last match of the current season having scored 3,562 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield runs from 12 seasons in a career that began when she was still a high school student at Waikato Diocesan.

Finding support at the top of the order has been central to Dodd’s hot summer, with Hinds captain Anlo van Deventer averaging 90.80 after having scored the first two one-day centuries of her own domestic career, along with three half centuries, in a dream one-day summer for the skipper.
After her breakthrough maiden century, van Deventer then produced Central’s highest individual score, an unbeaten 169, as part of a record-breaking Hallyburton Johnstone Shield partnership with Dodd (142, in a colossal second-wicket stand of 328), in the last round, in which they also helped set a Central record team tally (339/2) and the biggest winning margin (247 runs) for their side, against a weakened Otago Sparks team.
Dodd is not only the season’s leading run-scorer, but requires just three more dismissals to equal Emily Travers’s Central Hinds wicketkeeping record of 20 dismissals in a season. Dodd is currently third on the Central all-time list in her maiden season in green, one behind Kelly Rangi who made 18 dismissals in 2014/15. Rangi holds the Central record for most catches in a season (16) with Dodd (15) poised to equal or to overtake that mark if she makes just one catch in Saturday’s final.
Hawke’s Bay’s rising pace star Rosemary Mair meanwhile returns from the WHITE FERNS with her tally at 15 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield wickets this season from eight matches at a bowling average of 15.33 — ranking her second alongside Auckland Hearts pace ace Holly Huddleston (15 wickets from eight matches at 16.13), whom she displaced in the WHITE FERNS Rose Bowl squad to Australia. The pair will continue their statistical rivalry into the last match of the season, where both pace bowlers will need a bag to overtake Wellington Blaze leg-spinner Deanna Doughty who has finished the season with an superb 21 wickets at 13.42.
The Central record for most wickets in a one-day season is 20, shared by Donna Trow and Zara McWilliams, while the Hearts' record is 22, held by Natalie Scripps.
For the Hearts, 23-year-old Lauren Down, who made her WHITE FERNS debut at the tail of last season, has had her most successful season yet with the bat, posting 366 runs at 33.27. The calm top-order rising star reached her maiden century this summer, after having suffered a painful dismissal on 96 in the opening round.
In eight seasons, Down's previous best haul was last summer’s 300 runs from 13 matches at 27.27, but she also packs plenty of big-match temperament and experience. Down scored 63 in the Hearts' eight-wicket Grand Final win over Wellington Blaze at Auckland's Melville Park in 2015/16, helping underpin the winning effort into the 38th over of a 43-over chase.
Hearts veteran Katie Perkins will meanwhile be looking to emulate the unbeaten century she scored at Hagley Oval in the 2016/17 Grand Final, but will hope to be on the winning side this time around.
The Hearts have won the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield four times in the last seven years (including three of the past four seasons) while none of the Central Hinds squad selected for Saturday's Grand Final were involved the last time Central came out tops, in the 2009/10 season. This is the first time since that summer that the Central Hinds have qualified for a Grand Final.
Even with a number of fresh faces in her squad, Hearts captain and WHITE FERN Maddy Green will be able to call on plenty of experience, both Perkins and Regina Lili'i having led the team in her absence at various stages this summer.
