Representatives of the Board of New Zealand Cricket met with the Chairmen and CEOs of the six Major Associations yesterday as part of the NZC Constitutional Review process.
Last year NZC commissioned BoardWorks to provide an independent review of the NZC’s written constitution and 39 recommendations were made and issued to the media on 12 September 2012. Since then NZC has sought and gained feedback from the six Major Associations and 22 District Associations on those recommendations.
The purpose of yesterday’s meeting was to explore that feedback and, where possible, reach agreement on the best way forward for the sport. The meeting with Major Associations was extremely positive. All parties are committed to establishing a process that will allow the best possible candidates to apply for NZC Board positions and there was a strong level of consensus among the Major Associations as to how this is best achieved.
An important part of the review process is consideration of the ideal size, nature and composition of the NZC Board and the creation of a suitably revised Board structure. Later this year the existing NZC Board will stand down, although some may seek re-election, to enable this development to occur.
NZC and the Major Associations are seeking a wide range of applicants and encourage all those interested, including former international players, to put their names forward when the Director roles are advertised publicly in a few months’ time. In terms of the new NZC Constitution, input is welcomed from many interested parties, including former New Zealand test batsman John Parker and his group in regard to the 39 recommendations in the BoardWorks report. Two NZC directors have already met with Mr Parker on this matter.
The Constitution Review is now well underway, feedback has been received and is being considered, and both NZC and the Major Associations are confident that New Zealand Cricket will emerge from the review process stronger and invigorated by it.
The next step is for the drafting committee to prepare a new constitution and this will be made available to members and interested parties in due course.
