New Zealand Cricket confirms captain appointment process

New Zealand Cricket today confirmed the process it was undertaking for the appointment of the new BLACKCAPS captain to replace Daniel Vettori.

“The appointment of the captain is the responsibility of the New Zealand Cricket Board,” said CEO Justin Vaughan.

“In order to formulate a recommendation to the Board, management works with the coach of the team and the selectors.

“The usual process is slightly complicated in this instance by the fact that we are working to appoint a Director of Cricket to lead the roll-out of the High Performance Strategy.

“We believe it is only logical to involve this incoming appointee in the development of a captaincy recommendation to the Board,” said Vaughan.

In addition, the composition of the national selection panel needs to be confirmed as the current panel's term expires at the end of April, he said.

Vaughan noted that whilst it was New Zealand Cricket’s desire to appoint the new captain as soon as possible, the BLACKCAPS will not be participating in international cricket until the tour to Zimbabwe in late September, so there was time to allow the process to run its logical course.
