New Zealand Cricket asks cricket greats for input

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is mindful of the criticism it has received in recent weeks, some of which has come from former international players.

In an effort to open better lines of communication, NZC proposes a former New Zealand captains’ meeting in the New Year.

Former captains will be invited to attend the meeting which is intended to be an annual event designed to provide quality input from both the former captains and the players who were part of their era in cricket.  Additionally a reunion of former New Zealand players to be held during the third test against England in March is already scheduled.

Creating a vehicle for former captains and players to directly communicate their ideas and observations to NZC is complimented by the current Constitutional Review process that the Board has committed to in the early part of next year.

Following on from its press conference of Wednesday 12 December, NZC has now had the chance to study all the information provided to it following the change in captaincy of the BLACKCAPS.

“NZC has reached the conclusion that there was obviously misunderstanding and miscommunication between the parties involved,” says NZC Chief Executive Officer David White.

“We’ve already acknowledged mistakes were made on this issue and we have learned from those mistakes.  Team management has given an undertaking to improve communication and to ensure nothing similar occurs again.  The Board and Management of NZC make that same commitment,” he says.

“NZC believes it now serves no useful purpose to further rake over the events of the captaincy change.  It is time to draw a line under the issue,” says David White. “We now need to focus on the tour of South Africa.  This is going to be a challenging tour against one of the leading teams in the world, so it is important that the team now focuses and prepares to ensure it is competitive in this series.

“I am heartened by the strong and unanimous support shown by the NZC Board for the Chairman Chris Moller and myself for the tasks ahead.”

“We learn from our mistakes, improve our performance and move on so that New Zealand Cricket and the wider cricket family across New Zealand will become stronger in 2013 and beyond.”
