Murali nabs his 650th

A partnership of 161 between Ashwell Prince and AB de Villiers has helped steer South Africa out of the doldrums on the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors struggled from the outset and were soon reeling on 70-4.

However, Prince (86) and de Villiers (95) then steadied the ship but both fell agonisingly short of centuries on a day where wickets tumbled and runs flowed.

Shaun Pollock, who missed the first Test in order to witness the birth of his second daughter, also helped amass 57 for the Proteas in the latter stages of the day.

However, the star of the show was spin whiz Muttiah Muralitharan who claimed his 650th Test wicket and finished the day with 5-128.

The South African tail, though, did provide some resistance late in the day before Muralitharan claimed the last two wickets to see the Proteas finish the day all out for 361.
