Monty Panesar looks ahead

England's Monty Panesar says he still has a lot of work to do before he can compare himself to the other top finger spinners in world cricket.

After debuting in India last year and with a successful recent series against Pakistan, England coach Duncan Fletcher named him as the top finger spinner in international cricket.

"I think there are other better finger spinners like Daniel Vettori and Harbhajan Singh, who have taken more than 200 Test wickets each. It's flattering though, because I value his comments," Panesar told BBC Sport.

His impressive form has all but cemented him a spot in the Ashes squad but the left-armer is not taking anything for granted.

"It's any youngster's dream to be in an Ashes squad and especially with the cricketers that would be involved with the England squad, makes it something I'm very excited about, if it does happen."

He had been as affected as any other Englishmen by the Ashes series last year and said it would be a dream come true if he was selected for the tour which would also be good for his development.

Panesar is also keen to push for a spot in the one-day side after improving the batting and fielding side of his game.

"I'm trying not to look too far ahead, but hopefully if I can develop in other areas I can be selected in one-day cricket."

He is aware that his best days are in the future.

"All the world-class spinners that I've spoken to all say when you get to 30-plus you reach your peak, so I will find out then."
