Martin makes early triple strike

Chris Martin claimed three wickets in the morning session of the first National Bank Test as the BLACKCAPS pinned back Bangladesh at Dunedin’s University Oval.

Daniel Vettori won the toss in his first Test as captain on New Zealand soil, and inserted the visitors, who were playing their 50th match at this level.

Although the Tigers earned runs at a steady rate, Martin’s triple strike and the dismissal of Shariar Nafees by Vettori meant the home team had four wickets at lunch for 88 runs conceded.

Debuting opener Tamim Iqbal was unbeaten on 41 at the first break, alongside Aftab Ahmed, who was yet to score.

Martin struck early to remove Zunaed Siddique, also opening for the first time at Test level, in the third over.

Habibul Bashar shared a stand of 38 with Tamim before falling, again to Martin, with the last delivery of the ninth over.

On his return, the right-arm seamer removed captain and dangerman Mohammad Ashraful, who failed to score.

Nafees added 16 before he was deceived by Vettori’s slower ball, and Aftab and Tamim saw out the morning.
