Maia Lewis in surprise Hallyburton Johnstone Shield comeback

WHITE FERNS legend Maia Lewis is celebrating her first catch in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield... since January 2006!

The retired batting legend, now the team manager of Northern Districts women, took to the field for ND as a second fielding substitute just after the second drinks break, after injuries struck the team at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora, against the Canterbury Magicians.

The scorecard says it was Caitlin Gurrey, but it was 52-year-old in Gurrey's spare playing shirt who took a sharp catch off spinner Eimear Richardson to dismiss former ND dangerwoman Kate Anderson who now represents the Magicians.

Lewis had come onto the field after wicketkeeper Bernadine Bezuidenhout had pulled a quad, with Holly Topp taking the gloves. ND's designated 12th player was already on the field for captain Brooke Halliday who was off getting an x-ray for a blow on her thumb.

Opponent Lea Tahuhu quickly lent Lewis a spare pair of spiked shoes and she was fielding at midwicket when Anderson middled and pulled a full delivery her way.

Diving to her right, she took the catch just off the ground, to the delight of her team.

The former WHITE FERNS captain retired from cricket at the end of the 2005/06 season, having represented Canterbury; the short-lived North Harbour; and the Wellington Blaze over her extensive playing career, as well as playing 80 International matches across three formats for New Zealand.
