Mahmood sparks victory

Sajid Mahmood has turned on a fiery performance to help England tie its one-day international series against Pakistan.

Heading into the fifth and final match, England had struggled to gain any ascendancy in the previous outings between the two countries.

However, led by Mahmood, who snared a valuable 2-24 with the ball, England stormed home to crush Pakistan with 19 overs to spare.

Batting first, the visitors limped to 154-9 as the England pace attack took firm control.

Younis Khan (47), however, continued his rich vein of form, but it quickly proved to be a solo effort.

Despite starting well and racing to 42-0, England keeper Chris Read triggered a collapse for the visitors in the 12th over when he ran out Pakistani opening batsman Imran Farhat.

Two wickets then fell in consecutive overs and Pakistan failed to recover from that point on.

Set the flimsy total to chase down, England started in the worst possible fashion as wickets tumbled and at one point the hosts look set for defeat on 118-7.

However, Mahmood, backing up his sensational display with the ball, kept his nerve at the crease to hit 22, adding 37 with Michael Yardy to see the England home with 19 overs to spare.
