The West Indies have endured some disappointing results over the last year, but Lara says it is confidence, not talent, that is lacking.
"There is an abundance of talent in our team - what we were lacking was confidence and we are growing in this area," Lara told the BBC.
"I'm very excited about how the team is improving - the team is growing which is most important."
Lara has held the West Indian batting together over the last decade, and although he is captain, he expects the new crop of players to take the next step.
"I tell the guys the team belongs to them. I'm going to lead them out there but I expect guys to make major contributions on and off the field," he said
"That's happening now. We're on the road to get ready for the World Cup."
"In the next few months, you will continue to see improvements."
The West Indies cruised to a six-wicket win in the fourth match to claim an unassailable 3-1 series lead, and Indian captain Rahul Dravid pointed the finger squarely at his batsmen for the loss.
"We haven't got enough runs, to be very honest, in all the games except the first one," Dravid said.
"We just haven't put the runs on the board.
"We've struggled a bit on these wickets to get to terms with some of their spinners especially."
