Lara eyes retirement

Legendary West Indian cricketer Brian Lara has hinted that he will retire from one-day international cricket after next year's World Cup in the Caribbean.

Having taken over the captaincy reins recently, Lara will lead his team on home soil in the highly anticipated tournament before bowing out to concentrate on Test cricket.

Speaking to the BBC, the star batsman, who is just 38-runs short of amassing 10,000 in ODIs, said 2007 would see part of his career come to a close.

"I don't think I'll be playing one-day internationals after the World Cup. The form has been sketchy," he said.

"At the age of 37 I know what is expected but I want to fire in the World Cup which is such an important tournament for us as the hosts."

Lara first stormed onto the scene as a skilful left-hander in 1990 as a 21-year-old.

However, his best efforts have always come in Test cricket and he currently holds the individual scoring record of 400 not out.
