Christ’s College arrived in Palmerston North with bats blazing as they piled on the runs in their first innings of the tournament beating John McGlashan College by 101 runs. Christ’s College won the toss and elected to bat. Felix Huston, batting at number four, was hungry for a century, but fell just short putting 94* on the board. Although Oscar Davenport tried to slow them down with bowling figures of 3-48, there was no stopping the strong Cantabrian side. A slow start from John McGlashan, saw the top order out for less than 40 runs. With the run-rate proving too big a hurdle, John McGlashan couldn’t pick up the pace. Simon Cavanagh was the pick of the batters, toiling away for 30 off 35 balls. The Christ’s bowling performance was spearheaded by Angus Eglington who finished with bowling figures of 3 wickets for 27 runs.
Tauranga Boys' College 144/8 off 40 overs (D Henderson 45) lost to Napier Boys’ High School 148-8 off 37.1 overs (Z Foster 40, A Rawnsley 34, H McKinlay 2-6), Fitzherbert Park 2
Tauranga Boys’ College went close in their first game of the Junior Secondary Boys National Tournament, narrowly losing to Napier Boys' High School. Tauranga’s Dylan Henderson produced his teams highest batting score, putting 45 runs on the board, contributing to Tauranga’s final score of 144/8. Napier Boys’ High School chased down their target with 2.5 overs to spare. Napier’s Zach Forster put in a solid innings with 40 runs - his side's top run scorer. Having come off a suspected finger injury during Tauranga’s innings, Andrew Rawnsley showed his skill with the bat scoring 34 runs. Despite Harrison McKinlay’s best effort with the ball taking two wickets for just six runs, it wasn’t enough to deny Napier Boys' the win.
St Patrick’s College Silverstream 145-8 off 40 overs (A Cronin-Stone 49, K O’Connell 29, T Jones 3-28) lost to Auckland Grammar School 146-2 in 32.1 overs (P Kharel 59*, T Jones 54), Manawaroa Park 6
Auckland Grammar School have kick started their campaign with an eight wicket win in their match on day one against St Patrick’s College Silverstream. St Pats elected to bat first and were in early trouble with the quick loss of two wickets for 54 runs. Arana Cronin-Stone having competed in the ANZ Junior Cup two seasons prior, ensured the middle order had a solid foundation to launch from, putting 49 runs on the board. Kian O’Connell also helping his team out scoring 29. In reply the Auckland Grammar School’s chase posed a threat with the top order batsmen Pawan Karel (59*) and Tom Jones (54) both securing half centuries. The Auckland Grammar side reached their target after 32.1 overs with the loss of only two wickets.
