John McGlashan waited until the final day but will be happy to put some points on the competition scoreboard, winning on the final day of the Junior Secondary Boys tournament in Palmerston North. Winning the toss, they elected to bat, putting 153/9 on the board thanks to opener, captain and player of the tournament for his team Liam Barron adding 32 runs. Tauranga Boy’s captain Luke Scrimgeour, top scored with 39 runs in reply. Liam Barron, Will Kara, Simon Cavanagh, Jonty Riley and Jaxon Thompson were all influential in slowing down the Tauranga Boys’ side, each taking two wickets and securing their first win at Nationals.

Auckland Grammar School 222/5 (P Kharel 68, A Weerasinghe 34) beat Christ’s College 194 all out off 39 overs (H Shore 58, F Huston 28, A Palenski 3-30), Fitzherbert Park #2

Auckland Grammar School secured their fifth win and claimed the 2021 Junior Secondary Boys tournament title after the two strongest teams duked it out on the final day. Auckland Grammar’s Pawan Kharel put up an aggressive display, spending over an hour and a half at the crease and creating room for the middle order to  launch from. Kharel, the player of the tournament, put on another strong display with 68 runs before being run out by Christ’s Finn McCormack-Young. Aashan Weerasinghe contributed an extra 34 runs, hitting the tournaments only six. The counterattack from Christ’s College was cut short as the top order fell away with little impact to the scoreboard. Felix Huston made 28 while a surprise late order star, Hunter Shore, bumped his teams total up by adding 58 runs. A Palenski shone with the ball taking three wickets for 30 runs, including the final wicket, winning Auckland Grammar the game and the title for the 2021 Junior Secondary Boys tournament.

St Patrick’s College Silverstream 139 all out off 35.5 overs (K Sharkey 30*, R Jayakuru 30, S Pickering 4-12) lost to Napier Boys’ High School 140/3 (A Rawnsley 48, J Cotter 44*, M Bassett 2/26), Manawaroa Park #6

Napier Boy’s High School secured an easy second place in today’s final day of the Junior Secondary Boys tournament after beating St Patrick’s College Silversteam by seven wickets. Rakith Jayakuru put up 30 runs off 59 ball, while coming in at number seven, teammate Keegan Sharkey added 30* off 35 balls. Napier’s Sam Pickering was influential taking four wickets for 12 runs in an effort to challenge the Wellington side, leaving them all out for 139. Having built on yesterday’s momentum, beating power-house Christ’s College, nothing could slow down Jacob Cotter (44*) and Andrew Rawnsley (48) from delivering two outstanding innings, both smashing seven fours and guiding Napier Boys’ High School to a comfortable victory with nine overs to spare.
