Opening batsman Virender Sehwag steered the hosts to victory on the final day with a convincing 76 not out.
India lost just one wicket as it chased down a victory target of 144, with Sehwag and skipper Rahul Dravid, who was 42 not out, putting on 105 runs for the unbroken second wicket partnership.
The home side's debutant speedster Munaf Patel earlier dashed England's hope of salvaging a draw when commencing the final day on 5-112, 74 runs ahead.
The 22-year-old ripped through the visitors' lower order as England was bowled out for 181 prior to the lunch break.
Patel struck three quick blows to claim 4-25 to go with his three wickets in the first innings.
Leg spinner Anil Kumble added one more wicket to his tally after producing three quick blows late on day four to leave an injury-depleted England struggling to save the match.
Kumble took 4-70 to finish with nine wickets in the match.
The match was expected to finish in a draw after only 65 overs were played on the first two days due to rain and bad light.
