India gets first win in South Africa

India achieved an historic first Test victory in South Africa when beating the home team at the Wanderers in Johannesburg by 123 runs in the first Test.

Chasing a target of 403 for victory, South Africa fought well from being 120-5 at one stage. Ashwell Prince and Shaun Pollock added 67 runs for the seventh wicket to keep South African hopes alive.

Pollock was especially punishing towards Zaheer Khan who had been responsible for dismissing Mark Boucher on his overnight score of 23 when trapping him leg before wicket.

Pollock took 23 runs from 12 balls from Khan to see him out of the attack.

With the rearguard assault underway, India suffered some minor alarms when Zaheer and Sreesanth left the field with injuries.

But it was the experience of leg-spinner Anil Kumble that broke the resistance as he sput a ball across Pollock to clip his off bail when he was on 40.

While the end did not come immediately, it proved too big a gap for Prince to fill and he too, was eventually bowled by Kumble for 97.

Zaheer then came back and polished off the lower-order and victory belonged to India having dismantled the last barrier for Indian cricket and completing victories away against all the Test nations.

Kumble ended with 3-54 while Sreesanth had 3-59 and Zaheer 3-79.
