India edges in front

India has dismissed South Africa for 373 to claim a 41-run first innings lead at stumps on day three of the third Test in Cape Town.

Leg spinner Anil Kumble led the way taking four wickets including the important scalp of South African skipper Graeme Smith who was caught six runs short of his century.

After beginning the day at 1-144, South Africa lost Smith (94) and Hashim Amla (63) in quick succession after the pair put on 159 for the second wicket.

Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince then took up the fight sharing an 83 run partnership before Sachin Tendulkar claimed Kallis on 54.

India's spinners – Kumble, Tendulkar and Sehwag – tied down the South African batters on a pitch that deteriorated further as the day wore on.

When Kumble claimed Prince for 26 and Gibbs fell cheaply, the South Africans were left in the precarious position of 6-281 at tea.

But the Indian bowlers failed to capitalise and Shaun Pollock (31) combined with Mark Boucher (50) for a 69-run stand to keep the visitors in the match.

The final three wickets came in a flurry with Kumble claiming Makhaya Ntnini with the final ball of the day.

The match is now poised for an exciting final two days with the series level at 1-1.
