Hughes wants it tough

Australian selector and former fast bowler Merv Hughes wants his national side to become hard-nosed ahead of November's Ashes series in Australia.

Hughes said the well-publicised friendships between the Australian and English players in last year's series may have contributed to the defeat in England.

"It was all too matey for me - imagine if Shane Warne and Kevin Pietersen didn't have that friendship," he told the BBC.

"We lost the attitude towards the English that we once had, the attitude that was introduced by Allan Border."

Hughes admits he would like the team to revert back to the style that was played under Border where uncompromising cricket took centre-stage.

Border took on a struggling team in 1985, leading them to 32 Test victories, with three Ashes series wins in six.

Hughes' words are similar to those of former skipper Steve Waugh, who said earlier in the year that Australia had "lost a bit of mystique" by being too friendly with England.

However, Test opener Justin Langer believes Hughes' call for the side to become hard-nosed is one to be scoffed at.

"It's the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard," he said.

"We played good, hard cricket on the field and had a beer off it - that's how it should be."
